My Favourite Movies

Lords of Dogtown

After watching this movie anybody will want to go out and buy a skatebord and start skateboarding. The rebellion of the Z-boys goes down in history an this movie documents it perfectly. One of my favourite actors, Emile Hirsch, portrays his role as ‘Jay(J-Boy)Adams- the wild and slightly bizarre member of the group- flawlessly. If you want to see a little attitude, watch this movie.

Garden State

This movie is stuffed full of subltle humour and small lessons that keep you entranced the whole way through. Natalie Portman is a God and her crazyness is infectious. Zac Braff is a comic genious and he turns a story of depression into something interesting and unique.

Princess Mononoke

I am a big fan of fantasy and anime’s so I immediately loved this film. I think what made this stand out for me was its underlining moral of the destruction of nature through industrialisation. I adore the natural world and Miyazaki has not only coveyed it wonderfully, he has recreated it as a new and mythical world that encourages me to appreciate it even more.

Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction like a lot of Quentin Tarantino’s films is an ironic mix of comedy and crime. Its hard to describe what I think during this movie, I guess “woh” and “cool” sum it up fairly well. I thought the excessive use of swear words was a bit much at first but I soon realised that just by swearing it makes everything much funnier and more powerful. I especially like the scene when Vincent says “That’s a pretty fucking good milkshake. I don’t know if it’s worth five dollars but it’s pretty fucking good.”

SuperBad

Its a big call to put a comedy on a “best movies” list, but, SuperBad is genius. It made me cringe many a time as they repeatedly got themselves into extremely awkward yet beleiveable( for a teenager in todays society) positions. It illustrates some of the funniest things about being a teenager and excecutes them in an even funnier way. While I would normally not think a comedy to be one of my favourites, Superbad is an exception.

Across the Universe

I only watched this recently, which I regret, because its amazing. Before watching it I wasn’t aware that it was a musical, within a few minutes they were bursting out in song and I was wondering… “why would they do that?”, at about 10 minutes in I was singing along and loving the format. I could even say that I LIKED that it was a musical. I loved The Beatles before this and it only made me love them even more.

Into the Wild

I am a fan of living, and I feel that Christopher McCandless/ Alexander Supertramp was also a fan of living( you would realise the irony if you have seen it) and that is why he decided to go out to have a very lively experience. It makes me me want to go on a very big adventure. It’s not perfect but the inspiration it causes me to have is undeniable. Emile Hirsch is also in this one and he once again, performed brilliantly.
